Serie B is the chaos league again

The play-offs in Serie B start on May 26th and 27th. Or not? Because Reggina wants to fight the verdict until the last instance after deducting 3 points, the planned start of the promotion games is in danger of being delayed. Italian football is once again living up to its reputation. After all, it is a tradition in the boot state that people fight for points not only on the green lawn, but also in court.

Serie B in particular has repeatedly stood out as a chaos league. This time Reggina is the troublemaker. The traditional club from Calabria was saved from bankruptcy in the summer; the new club management around owner Felice Saladini and president Marcello Cardona was able to avert bankruptcy thanks to a restructuring plan. However, no savings were made, on the contrary, money was spent. The most expensive coach in Serie B was hired in Filippo Inzaghi. Due to the unpaid income tax for the months of November and December and late payments on some player salaries, the 3 point deduction was now added to the table.

Reggina will appeal and, if necessary, go to the CONI court. The club relies on the restructuring plan, which does not make it possible to meet the payments because the court in Reggio Calabria refused permission in view of the accumulated tax debts of the old club management. The case has been known since the beginning of the year. Nothing happened for a long time before the sports court of the Italian Football Association announced the sentence on Monday.

Is that fair? Reggina is firmly convinced that she will get justice before the CONI court at the latest, especially since the laws of the state, which in this case do not allow the club from Calabria to meet the payments, are above the regulations in football. On the other hand, the question arises as to whether it is really fair for a team to pay no income tax and then get away scot-free. The competition rightly complains about Reggina's financial advantage.

The verdict in the first instance is a 3 point deduction. And there could soon be 6, because Reggina was also unable to meet the March payment deadline. Initially, coach Pippo Inzaghi's team slipped to the last play-off place. One thing is certain: If Reggina does not win the case before the appeal court and the 3 points are returned, the proceedings will continue. The play-offs can only start after the CONI court's ruling. A late start is therefore anything but unlikely.

Before Reggina's points were deducted, Genoa had already been deducted a point due to financial irregularities. The club from the Ligurian port city accepted the sentence. It could soon hit Parma. The former European Cup winner is currently 4 points behind FC Südtirol, level on points with Cagliari in 5th place. Parma is said to have made a tax payment late and could be punished with the deduction of one point.
