Arianna Varone, a player from Serie B club ASD Riozzese, has died in a tragic traffic accident.

The accident occurred on the night of Tuesday to Wednesday near Pavia. According to media reports, Varone, who was riding a scooter, collided with a truck. The 21-year-old died at the scene of the accident.

There was huge consternation on social media. “We cling to the pain of the family we are and will always be close to,” wrote her club Rioezzese on Instagram. Italy's Football Association (FIGC) also spoke up: “She will leave a big gap in the lives of those who loved her and were lucky enough to be close to her. Goodbye Arianna.”

The central midfielder grew up in the youth teams of Inter and Milan before moving to Riozzese in 2017. Last year, Varone celebrated victory in the Serie C Italian Cup with the club from Lombardy. In the past Corona season, the promoted team ended up in 6th place in Serie B, with Varone playing 8 times.
