Professional return after 18 years: What is happening in Trent now?

President and entrepreneur Mauro Giacca has achieved what many of his predecessors failed: the return of Trent to professional football. The capital city club was represented in professional football for the last time in the 2002/03 season. Now it's that time again and if FC Südtirol doesn't win the playoffs, there will be a regional derby next season.

The difference to 2003 is that Trent was playing in Serie C2 back then. That was the 4th league, now we play in the 3rd league. The C2 no longer exists. For a long time after Mezzocorona's exit, it was almost unthinkable that a team from Trentino would be promoted back to professional football. There were always big announced projects in Trento, but in the end Series D was always the highest of emotions - and even there, Trento rarely played a major role. In June 2014, Mauro Giacca took over the reins at Trent, which had been relegated to the national league at the time. Although it also took some time to get started, we can now say: Mission successful. “We are overjoyed and also feel great satisfaction,” said Giacca. Step into professional sports The step from the top league to Serie D may be big, but a new world awaits Trent in Serie C. The club was already professionally positioned this year, but playing in a purely professional league is a big step. It starts with the youth teams and ends with the environment, which hasn't seen professional football for 18 years. One can only dream of a training center like that of FC Südtirol in Trento. Coach Carmine Parlato is considered a Serie D specialist. It is uncertain whether he will be allowed to continue.

The anticipation is still huge. “I'm looking forward to playing against big clubs and playing at important stadiums across Italy. The challenge will be great. I can promise every Trent fan that we will all put in an enormous effort,” emphasizes Giacca. A big goal of the club is a new stadium. In contrast to FC Südtirol, which enjoys the trust of the state government, the cooperation between AC Trient and the state of Trentino is less good. Is the derby against FCS waiting? A special treat could wait in autumn: the regional derby with FC Südtirol. If the White Reds do not make it into Serie B through the playoff win, there will be a duel with Trent next season. When asked about FC Südtirol, Giacca was able to take a small dig in the interview Trentino don't hold back: “The differences? FC Südtirol lacks adrenaline. They hardly have any fans, but we do. I think that's also the reason that the FCS isn't promoted to Serie B. The team lacks the pressure from the spectators, which makes HC Bozen the winning team.”

But what happens next in Trent? It is not yet clear how the club, founded in 1921, will change by the start of next season. It can be assumed that AC Trento will completely change its face (again) in the coming season. That was already the case after the league title last year, when South Tyrolean coach Flavio Toccoli, among others, had to pack his bags after an outstanding performance. The transfer summer will show whether coach Carmine Parlato and this year's promotion heroes can prove themselves in professional football. But the signs point to farewell.
