Thomas Mair saves Virtus from their first home defeat

Virtus Bozen was the first South Tyrolean team to resume play on Epiphany. Este was a guest at the Internorm Arena. Virtus has never lost at home, so the football pitch at Talferwiesen is a fortress. That didn't change on Wednesday either. The reason for this was Thomas Mair, who scored his first goal for Bolzano in the final minutes. In the summer, the Burggräfler dared to make the jump from his hometown club Schenna (state league) to Virtus Bozen in Serie D. 2 leagues higher, Mair – who had been scoring goals on an assembly line in the amateur leagues in recent years – had to adapt and watch many games from the bench. He came on as a substitute against Este a few minutes before the end - and rewarded himself for his patience with the goal to make it 1-1. Virtus dominates the first half In the first 10 minutes both teams felt each other out. Although both teams tried hard, there was nothing tangible that could be counted. Virtus had their first opportunity to score in the 11th minute. After a corner, Filippo Carella came to the header, completely alone, a few meters in front of the opponent's goal, but the ball went next to the box. As a result, Arnaldo Kaptina, Michael Bacher and Elis Kaptina were unlucky in their attempts. After around half an hour, Virtus increased the number of shots, but the goal just wouldn't come. Once again Carella was completely forgotten at a corner, but managed to put the ball next to the goal from close range. In the 42nd minute Este scored their first goal. The leading scorer Marco Farinazzo shot from 28 meters, but the ball rolled next to the goal. A former Virtus player provokes a penalty Estes Baniamini opened the second half with a shot from 2 meters, but it clearly missed its target. Even a free kick by Greco in the 25th minute did not pose a threat to the Virtus goal. In the 54nd minute, Este made a double substitution, which immediately paid off. Former Virtus player Pasha escaped the Virtus defense and was illegally stopped in the penalty area by Federico Davi. Cardellino safely sank the penalty that was due. In the 71st minute, substitute Michael Cia brought a corner in front of the goal, Federico Davi headed towards the Este goal, but Beniamin was able to save with his head on the line. As a result, Virtus restricted the guests in their own half and in the 90th minute, substitute Thomas Mair scored to make it 1-1, which was much celebrated.
