Julian Torggler: “I’m not happy yet”

A day by Julian Torggler is quite tiring. In the mornings he works as a salesman in a fashion store in Bolzano. In the afternoon he drags his car along the Penser Joch mountain path into the Wipptal and then to the Brenner, where he is driven by carpool to the SC Schwaz training location. A total of two hours drive. After the same number of hours of training, we go back to the Sarner Stube.

So far only number two in goal Since January, “Töx” has been running this program four to five times a week. Of course, this requires the willingness to make sacrifices, which the ambitious goalkeeper brings with him. However, the cost-income ratio is not yet correct. So far he hasn't been able to go beyond the number 12 role in Schwaz, meaning he hasn't been allowed to take care of the shop in any minute of the game. “I came to Schwaz at the beginning of January with the help of a player agent,” said Torggler. “I had the feeling that the club was counting on me, and that became clear in several conversations. I also completed a decent amount of preparation and didn't concede a goal in the friendly matches. But during the second half of the season the coach trusted the other keeper. I haven’t had the chance to prove myself yet.”

Return to your South Tyrolean homeland? For the young goalkeeper, who grew up playing football at FC Südtirol, later completed a season each with St. Georgen and Tramin in the top league and was under contract with the regional league team Salurn in the first half of this season, this is a difficult situation that is now giving him pause brought. His contract with the third division club expires at the end of the season. Torggler still has to have a few discussions with Schwaz, knowing that a new coach will be coming to the Tyroleans next year. The Sarner goalkeeper doesn't yet know whether this will increase his chances of getting match practice. This is another reason why he is not averse to a possible return to his South Tyrolean homeland. “If a club came knocking, I would really think about it.” Despite poor operating times, Torggler has also had some profitable experiences beyond the Brenner border. “The level is of a high league, if not Serie D standard,” says the 20-year-old. “In general, in my opinion, Austrian football is undervalued. The teams are at a good level tactically and playfully.”

It remains to be seen whether Torggler will continue to provide beautiful parades, daring dives or steely fist defenses in Schwaz, Tyrol next year. In any case, he still has five league games to celebrate his debut in the Austrian football business.
