Corruption scandal in Belgium: more arrests

A total of 19 people have been charged in the corruption scandal in Belgian football and nine suspects are in custody. The Belgian public prosecutor's office announced this on Friday. On Thursday, the public prosecutor's office initially initiated investigations against 22 people. The court also issued two international arrest warrants to enable the extradition of people detained abroad.

The charges came after Belgian police carried out a major raid on Wednesday, arresting a total of 29 people, including top player agents, two referees and senior officials.

Player agent in prison According to Belgian media reports, player agent Mogi Bayat, the alleged mastermind of the criminal activities, and his colleagues Dejan Veljkovic and Karim Mejjati had to spend Friday night in prison. Former RSC Anderlecht lawyer Laurent Denis and referee Bart Vertentin were also charged and detained.

Sebastien Delferiere, another referee, was charged on Thursday and then released on bail. Vertentin and Delferiere were immediately suspended by the Belgian Football Association.

Ivan Leko, coach of champions FC Brugge, was also brought before the examining magistrate on Thursday. The coach had to spend the night of Thursday in prison, but was initially released after an interrogation.
