Lionel Messi is world footballer of the year

The Argentinian from FC Barcelona prevailed in the election of the world association FIFA against the Dutchman Virgil van Dijk from Champions League winner FC Liverpool and his long-term rivals as well as Juventus player Cristiano Ronaldo (he was conspicuous by his absence at the gala on Monday). Messi is once again the sole record winner of the prestigious award.

After the Croatian Luka Modric triumphed last year and thus ended the ten-year “reign” of five-time world footballers Messi and Ronaldo, Messi has now reclaimed the title. The 32-year-old had triumphed in the league with Barcelona, reached the semi-finals of the Champions League and also won the Golden Shoe as the best goalscorer in Europe.

Klopp and Becker shine Jürgen Klopp was coach of the year. The team manager of the Champions League winner Liverpool FC prevailed against Spanish star coach Pep Guardiola (Manchester City) and Mauricio Pochettino (Tottenham Hotspur). From a German perspective, Jupp Heynckes (2013) and Joachim Löw (2014) had previously won the title, which has been awarded since 2010.

Liverpool goalie Alisson Becker was named goalkeeper of the year, leaving Marc-Andre Ter Stegen (Barcelona) and Ederson (Manchester City) behind.
