Matteo Timpone has gained a foothold in the country of the world champion

In January 2014, Matteo Timpone took a deep career break. After he only played sporadically at FC Südtirol and Serie D club Marano, he made an unusual decision and signed for German fourth division club FC 08 Homburg. The Saarlanders who live in the Although they were represented in the Bundesliga in the 80s, their glory days were long past long behind him and the shine in the 20.000-seater Waldstadion had already faded, but for Timpone the choice of club turned out to be a real stroke of luck. He won the national cup straight away in his first season. As a result, the 22-year-old striker was allowed to play in the first round of the DFB Cup against Borussia Mönchengladbach in August last year. The outsider lost 1:3, but for Timpone it was the start of a successful season.

“The beginning was very difficult because of our newly assembled squad, but then we really picked up speed and ultimately finished the season in fifth place. In the cup we made it to the final again, but had to admit defeat on penalties,” concluded Timpone. In total, he has made 26 competitive appearances and scored 7 goals in the past twelve months - including the 1-0 winning goal on the last matchday against Waldhof Mannheim.

Timpone is (still) leaving his future open

Immediately after the end of the season, FC Homburg offered the offensive player from Bolzano an extension to his contract, which was about to expire. “I have the option to sign for two more years,” said Timpone, who, however, has not yet made a forward-looking decision. “The fact is that I really like it in Germany. Aggressive, demanding football is played here. At home games we regularly play in front of more than 2.000 spectators, and the whole environment is just right.”

However, since there are also inquiries from the third highest Italian league, Timpone has asked for some time to think about it. “Of course I want to go back at some point and maybe even wear the jersey of my home club, FC Südtirol. However, 80% of the time I will stay in Germany.” In Homburg, they are already expecting to welcome Timpone back at the start of training on June 25th.
