Matthias Bacher: “We have to keep both feet on the ground”

Matthias Bacher, when the game calendar for the league was presented, many experts saw the Naturns team at the bottom of the table right from the start. Your team is now leading the table after two match days. Did you expect these results yourself? “No, we didn't expect such a start either, because with St. Georgen and Tramin we had a very difficult opening program. But we have had a strong national league year and have managed to carry the momentum and euphoria from last season into this season. However, we know that the table is currently only a snapshot. We therefore have to keep our feet on the ground.” Even in the cup, Naturns didn't give up against St. Pauls. What is the foundation for yellow-blue success? “We form a close unit on the field. The cohesion within the team is excellent, which helps us enormously. We get along excellently on and off the pitch, which is perhaps a crucial difference compared to the 2013/14 season, when we were relegated at the end.” Before the start of the championship, staying in the league was announced as the goal for the season. Has anything changed after the first results? “No, absolutely not. We are aware that the table is not meaningful after two match days. Our focus therefore remains on not getting into the relegation zone. With the six points we have laid a good foundation, but the road to staying in the league is still very long. We'll be happy to take anything that ends up being added to the points needed to avoid relegation.” On Sunday Naturns welcomes newly promoted Rotaliana at home. Your team will start the game as favorites for the first time, will that change anything? “That is certainly possible, as we were perhaps underestimated by St. Georgen and Tramin. Our future opponents may take the field with a different attitude. But even in the last second half of the season we were mostly favorites before the games and so we know what to expect. As for ourselves, we treat Rotaliana with a lot of respect. At the weekend they led until the 80th minute in St. Georgen, which shows that there is quality in this team. Sunday’s game will certainly not be any easier than the first two games.” You yourself also experienced a tailor-made start. With three goals in two games, you are joint top scorer with Max Dalpiaz. Is the top scorer's crown a secret goal of yours? “That’s just a minor matter, because the success of the team is the main priority. I'm happy if I can help us achieve our goal for the season with my goals, but I don't keep an eye on the top scorers list."
