Matys Goller: Salurn's whiz kid with a killer instinct

In the summer, Matys Goller decided to make a decisive change in his career. Away from his hometown club Weinstraße Süd to the other bank of the Etsch to the US Salurn. The 24-year-old offensive player seized the opportunity to prove himself in the league. SportNews conducted an interview with him.

Matys Goller, you got off to a flying start... “I decided to give it my all right from the start. I didn’t expect it to work so well straight away, especially since the top league is completely new territory for me.”

Did you notice a big difference between the Oberliga and the Landesliga?

"Yes I have. In the top league the game is much more fast-paced, the opposing defenders don't give you much space and follow you every step of the way. That’s why it takes a little time to get used to it.”

What motivated you to change? “When the request came from Salurn, I immediately agreed. (Weinstraße continues to hold the player rights, note) I wanted to find out whether I could compete in a higher league. I don’t regret this step at all.”

Has your everyday life changed as a result? “To a small extent, certainly. In the top league you get a lot more attention, so I had to be available for interviews on the Sunday after the game. This is very unusual for me. I try to concentrate on playing football first and foremost.”

Your teammate Max Dalpiaz recently described you as a complete striker with the necessary killer instinct. A big compliment… “I’m pleased that my offensive partner rates me that way (laughs). I get along very well with him and Marzocchella, and not just on the field. I hope that we continue to harmonize so perfectly.”

Do you take a look at our weekly top scorer list from time to time? “Of course I have it in mind. A striker is measured by his goals. My personal record is 18 goals this season and I would like to break that at some point. However, these personal goals can only be achieved if the team also works. First and foremost is the performance of US Salurn.

While we're on the topic: Which place in the table is Salurn aiming for? “We don’t have a clearly defined goal for the season. The team was changed in many positions in the summer and only needs to grow together over time. The quality is undoubtedly there. If we form a tight-knit unit, a place among the top five teams is absolutely possible.”

Three goals in three games. Matys Goller couldn't have taken a better approach in Salurn. After his brace on Sunday against Plose, he and Brixen striker Davide Lorenzi are leading the league's top scorers list. “I didn't expect such a start. I want to go up with Salurn,” said Goller.
