Max Reinthaler is making a new attempt

Normally, a young footballer with a medical file as long as Max Reinthaler's would probably have hung up his boots long ago. But what is normal in the career of the young South Tyrolean? He already played for Udinese in the Europa League against Liverpool, and also played for the Bavarian village club TSV Gersthofen and Rydaholm GOIF in Sweden's fifth division. Since July 2014 he has been under contract with Bundesliga club FC Augsburg, for whom he should have made his debut in the top German league long ago if it weren't for the constant injuries. Torn tendons, muscular problems, torn cruciate ligaments - at 22 years old, Reinthaler has experienced almost every football injury. His knee has been bothering him for the last six months, but that seems to have been forgotten now.

First starting eleven in eight months

On October 20th, Reinthaler celebrated his comeback in the fourth-tier Regionalliga Bayern. He was allowed to play for 45 minutes at Augsburg's second representative's away game in Illertissen. Two more part-time appearances followed before he was back in the starting line-up last weekend for the first time in exactly eight months. In his position in central midfield, the Algunder player was immediately one of the best players on the pitch. But an action from the 86th minute shows that not everything is going smoothly, when a header from the 1,93 meter chicken was scratched off the line. Augsburg II ended up losing 0-2. However, Reinthaler's anger over the missed opportunity and the result will have quickly dissipated, as it is not in relation to the personal disappointments he has had to endure over the past two and a half years. Reinthaler now definitely wants to put this period of suffering behind him and achieve the longed-for breakthrough in professional football, albeit with some delay.

Max Reinthaler was once considered an exceptional talent on the verge of breaking into the top European leagues. But then things became quiet for the 22-year-old Algunder, who has hardly played any games in the past two and a half years. Now he is reporting back to FC Augsburg.
