Media: Number of controversial Monday games will not be increased

Cologne (SID) The number of controversial Monday games in the Bundesliga will not be increased after the 2021/22 season. This emerges from a statement from the German Football League (DFL), which is available to the Funke media group. After the end of the television contract that has been running since this season, there will be a maximum of five Monday games, but the number could also decrease. “The DFL currently has no plans to expand the number of Monday games,” the statement said. The first of five Monday games this season will take place on February 19th between Eintracht Frankfurt and RB Leipzig. According to the DFL, the introduction of the additional game date was “not for commercial reasons”. “The Monday matches account for less than one percent of media revenue,” writes the DFL. The date was only introduced to relieve the Europa League starters. “Affected clubs and sports directors had previously repeatedly asked – also publicly – not to have to compete again on Saturday after international games on Thursday,” said the DFL. The date sparked a lot of criticism, especially among fans. The “Südtribüne Dortmund” alliance, an association of fan clubs and ultra groups, has already announced a boycott of the Monday game between Borussia Dortmund and FC Augsburg on February 26th.
