Tomorrow things will get serious: FC Südtirol at the start of the Italian Cup against Matera

FC Südtirol got a very doable draw. The white and reds will meet the footballers of Matera on August 4th at the Drusus Stadium, who will take part in the championship of the fifth highest Italian league next season.

The opponent

Matera has had a difficult summer, but the Basilicata club has recently started to feel cheerful again. Originally, the club should have received six penalty points for the upcoming championship, but since no irregularities were found during the investigations into the games against Campania (December 22, 2012) and Puteolana (November 24, 2012), the team was acquitted by the arbitration court. However, promotion from the green table to the second division was not granted, which is why Matera will play again in the fifth highest Italian league next season.

Last year the white and blue were eliminated in the quarterfinals against Casertana. One of Matera's strongest players is Francesco Di Gennaro (1982), who, among other things, played with Gallipoli in Serie B (2009). In the last championship he netted a total of twelve times.

Piazzi: “The Italian Cup is not one of our priorities”

The sporting director of the White-Reds, Luca Piazzi, was already expecting a draw of this kind. “Above all, we are happy that we can start in front of our home crowd. Matera is a good team, but the Italian Cup is not one of our priorities because of how it is structured. Nevertheless, we will try to do our best. It’s a good test for the upcoming championship,” said Piazzi. Last year, FC Südtirol reached the second round, where they were ultimately defeated by Modena 2-0.

The winner of the FCS – Matera match will face the Italian second division team Empoli in the next round. The winner of the game will face Serie B team Empoli in Tuscany on August 11th. Against Matera, Coach D'Anna will have to do without Alessandro Campo (suspended but injured anyway) and probably Simone Corazza (ankle injury).
