Nicoletti vs. Nicoletti: A Family Affair

On Sunday it's that time again: Then the Nicoletti Juniors will be visiting their seniors in the Passeier Valley. “Of course it’s always a great feeling. For me as a father, it is a kind of crowning achievement and confirmation when I see my boys playing in the first team. That means that the many hours invested in football with my sons were worth it,” explained Passeier coach and father Marco Nicoletti. For the Nicolettis, this is the fourth family encounter on the football field, as they met twice last season, as well as in the first half of this year's season. “In our first duel, my older son Stefan scored a goal, but we still won the game 3-1. In the second match, of all people, the younger offspring Andreas decided the game with his 2-1 goal in Lana's favor - that really hurt at the time," remembers Marco Nicoletti with a twinkle in his eye.

An ideal birthday present For him, the duel with his sons on Sunday is a kind of birthday present, as he celebrated his 50th birthday on Saturday (yesterday). As a coach, he naturally wants a win: “We have to win the game because we desperately need the points.” So the father doesn’t allow his sons to score? “I would like it best if both of them put in a good performance, maybe score a goal, but we take the three points,” smiles Marco Nicoletti. There was of course a special atmosphere at the kitchen table during the week. “We always talk a lot about football, but these days nobody wants to reveal too much. So there’s a healthy rivalry.” In some places a suspicion now arises: A good coach as a father, two talented players as sons – would be a fruitful mix for a team, wouldn't it, Marco Nicoletti? “No, I can’t imagine that. “That wouldn’t be fair, not for my sons, not for the other players,” the 50-year-old quickly rejects the double burden of father and coach. Nevertheless, Sunday's game will be a very special affair for the Nicolettis. In any case, Mamma Nicoletti is keeping her fingers crossed for her two sons – and one thing is certain: the points stay in the family.
