Oberliga: That's why things are going again at St. Martin

Small nuances are often the difference between victory and defeat in sports and especially in football. Often just one small thing no longer needs to fit together and a “winning team” quickly turns into a bunch of losers. Or the other way around.

The SC St. Martin has also changed from Saul to Paul. Having started the 2013/14 league season with a lot of praise, the “Mortiner” were soon deep in the relegation battle. After just two match days and just as many defeats, legendary coach Paul Pircher was relieved of his duties, but his successor Roberto Cortese also initially had difficulty building a functioning collective out of the many extremely strong individual players. So after six match days, St. Martin only had two points.

As the first half of the season went on, the Cortese team got stronger and stronger - by the second half of the season at the latest, the Psairer engine was running smoothly again. 13 points since the turn of the year (4 wins, one draw, only one defeat) make them the third best league team and the best domestic club in the top regional league.

The reasons St. Martin is a home power again! There were just as many wins in three home games in the second half of the season. Apart from Hansrudi Brugger & Co., only Bozner FC and second-placed Comano managed this in the spring. St. Martin scored eight goals in front of their own crowd - and only conceded one goal. League top value!

St. Martin is opening the doors! In the first half of the season, the Passeir attackers had problems. They only scored three goals after six games. Things have been completely different since the turn of the year. The “Mortiner” scored 12 times, and Theo Pamer alone celebrated the goal five times. Only Mori scored more often, namely 14 times.

St. Martin's defense team is closing the doors! Platter conceded four goals (two of them against Trent), three times the score was zero. This means that the traditional club has one of the best defenses in the league. In the first half of the season, St. Martin's number one had to fall behind nine times after six games.

Discipline is key at St. Martin! The Passeirians have only received one red card in the six matches since the turn of the year. Hansrudi Brugger, who was missing in the following game against Trent, was caught against Ahrntal. The result: St. Martin suffered a 1-2 defeat at the Briamasco Stadium.

The irrepressible will to win is back! Towards the end of the first half of the season, the “Mortiner” celebrated a few last-minute victories, for example a 1-0 home win against Brixen on matchday 13. But the Passeirians also showed what they are made of in the second half of the season. Most recently, against Salurn, the winning goal came in the third minute of stoppage time; against Naturns, Pamer scored the decisive 3-1 in the 88th minute. Ennemoser's 2-0 win against Ahrntal came in the second minute of stoppage time, while Pixner scored the equalizer against Tramin at the start of the second half of the season a minute after the end of regular time.

The salary: With nine rounds to go, St. Martin is in seventh place in the table, has 30 toughers on the board - and in this condition should soon have final relegation in the bag.
