Oberliga: A balance sheet after the first third of the season, part 2

AS Virtus Don Bosco (2 wins, 2 draws, 1 loss – 8 points, 5th place) Coach Roberto Cortese's team stumbled after a strong start to the season. First the defeat in St. Georgen, then the draw at home against Comano caused Virtus Don Bosco to slip to fifth place in the table. However, the promoted team, together with St. Georgen, Lavis and Tramin, still has the most accurate attack in the league (10 goals). Daniele Speziale, who leads the league's top scorer list, is mainly responsible for this. “However, what’s important is the team’s performance, and I can’t be satisfied with that yet,” explains Cortese and continues: “Our performance is too fluctuating. Only when we manage to bring lasting quality and intensity into our game will we be on the right track. I am very optimistic that we will be able to do this shortly, although there is still a lot of work ahead of us.” The Virtus coach has special praise for Thomas Frendo: “He is an absolute luxury for this league. What has also surprised me so far is Mattia Rella, who at the age of 18 is already showing leadership qualities.”

AFC Tramin (5 draws – 5 points, 11th place)

The draw kings from the Unterland did not imagine the start of the season like this. “In three games we gave away victory in the very last minute. That's why we can't be completely satisfied with the number of points we've achieved so far. We can't really blame ourselves for playing, because we played well in four out of five matches. There is no problem with that. What is noticeable is that we concede far too many goals from set pieces and in general (10 goals conceded, editor's note). We've already had five penalties whistled against us and the bell also rang after three free kicks. This is where we have to apply the lever. What is positive, however, is that we are still undefeated. Now we have to get the first three points in the derby against St. Pauls,” says Tramin’s captain Simon Greif.

ASC St. Martin (1 win, 2 draws, 2 defeats – 5 points 12th place)

People in the Passeier Valley are satisfied with how the team of player-coach Martin Saltuati plays football. But not with the loot that has been brought in so far. “Unfortunately, in certain situations we don't understand how to capitalize on our many opportunities. We have to become smarter and sometimes more aggressive. If, like last Sunday at Bozner FC, four or five regular players are missing, then we have to take advantage of that. Instead, we concede a goal from a chance and lose. In Levico we were even for 80 or 85 minutes and then conceded two goals. This shouldn't happen to us anymore. The start was good, with one win and two draws. But we dropped points in the last two games. If we had gotten them, we would now be third in the table and everything would be great,” says sports director Bernhard Tschöll.

AFC St. Pauls (1 win, 1 draw, 3 defeats – 4 points, 13th place)

Last Sunday the “Paulsner” were finally able to celebrate their first win since their return to the top league. And it was a “threesome” that the blue and whites urgently needed. “In the first few games we saw that we could keep up with our opponents. But there is a difference whether you take something with you or not. We played against very good teams who in the end will have nothing to do with relegation. And we did well against these teams, but we didn't get what we deserved. I would like to give the boys a huge compliment for not letting the initial results get them down. The fight for survival in the top league will be difficult, but we are right on schedule,” says Andreas Vieider, Vice President of St. Pauls.

SSV Ahrntal (1 win, 1 draw, 3 defeats – 4 points, 14th place)

People in Ahrntal are not happy with the start of the season. Four points from five games is not what we imagined before the start of the championship. But the situation is not dramatic either, because the team structure is completely intact and that makes coach Jürgen Großgasteiger confident: “We simply lack the power at the front. I hope that the players we depend on but are currently missing will join the team soon. I would particularly like to praise our many young players who did a good job. Of course, four points meant very little. But it's not a situation to be nervous about. With a bit of luck we could do better. Last weekend we gave up a 2-0 lead against Lavis.”

Oberliga: A balance sheet after the first third of the season, part 2

The highest regional league is already five match days old. This means that a sixth of the championship, or a third of the first half of the season, has already been held. Reason enough for SportNews to take stock of the South Tyrolean clubs after the start of the 2014/15 season.
