Oberliga: first round report card, part 2

SportNews presents the half-time report card in a three-part series, but this does not determine whether a team will ultimately be promoted or whether the year will have to be repeated. In the second part, Virtus Don Bosco, Ahrntal and Eppan collect their proof of performance.

Virtus Bosco (3rd place, 27 points)

If you, as a newcomer, are in third place after the first half of the season, then that is a top performance. But not for Virtus Don Bosco, which owed a lot in the first 15 games. After the transfer market in the summer, many Oberliga experts considered the Talferstadt team to be the number one contender for promotion. President Robert Oberrausch's club also set itself this goal when the team was presented to the public at Waltherplatz in Bolzano at the end of August. After the first half of the season we are a long way from this goal, eleven points to be exact. The leader St. Georgen has a lead over the Talferstädter. And Levico was also able to collect four more points than the green-whites. If they want to make it to Serie D at the end of the 2014/15 season, the Bolzano formation has to improve. It is possible that the transfer market will be hit again to make a little improvement here and there. The grade that comes out for Virtus Don Bosco after the 15th match day is therefore sufficient. With a small surcharge because the Cortese team is in the cup final on Saturday and will play against St. Georgen for the first title of the season.

Ahrntal (10th place, 19 points)

Last year the “Teldra” were the big surprise after the fall series. With 27 points they came second behind the then autumn champions Salurn. This year, the Großgasteiger team scored a solid 19 points, which is a satisfactory performance in itself. Especially when you consider that Ahrntal is almost exclusively playing with local players this year and that the two key players in the attack of the northernmost league club, Philipp Aichner and Manuel Pipperger, were repeatedly sidelined due to injury or suspension. If Ahrntal can double the result in the second half of the season - i.e. get 38 points - then Niederkofler & Co. should stay in class this year too. Jürgen Großgasteiger's protégés can no longer afford another second half of the season as contaminated as last year, when the “Teldra” only got 15 points. Otherwise, things could get tight again in the darned seventh year. Ahrntal's away record also needs to improve. Of the 19 points scored, only three came from a game away from home. However, the home record with only one defeat and one draw in seven matches is more than impressive. Note: 6 / 7

Eppan (12th place, 17 points)

Eppan + Oberliga = relegation battle. Since the Red and Whites have been chasing the ball in the highest regional league, they have had to defend themselves against relegation to the regional league year after year. They also did that in the first half of the season. New coach Max Nanni's team collected 17 points, three points more than a year ago at this point. If there are 17 points for the Eppan team in the second half of the season, then in all likelihood it might not be enough to play in the top league next year. That's why the performance in the first half of the season isn't completely sufficient. Armin Mayr & Co. have to improve a little more so that in 2015/16 it will be: Eppan + Oberliga = relegation battle. It will be interesting to see whether Ivano Ferrari will be hired as a firefighter during the winter break this year. In 2012 and 2013, the striker made a significant contribution to Eppan being able to stay in the league in the end.

Oberliga: first round report card, part 2

After 92 days and 15 matchdays, the first half of the league season came to an end on Sunday. With many positive surprises, but also some bitter disappointments.
