Oberliga season 2013-14: This is the ASC St. Martin

“Made in Passeiertal” – that applies to FC St. Martin 2013/14. Because with only a few exceptions, only Passeirians are playing for the “Mortinern” this year. “It was always our goal to give the best players from the Passeier Valley the chance to play in the top league. Our goal this year is to finish between positions three and six. But it will be very difficult because the league will be extremely balanced this year too,” believes Bernhard Tschöll, sporting director of St. Martin.

A year ago, the team from the Passeier Valley returned to the top regional league, where the club had previously played for 15 years from 1981-1996. Lanthaler and Co. couldn't have wished for a better league comeback. At the beginning of December, the surprise team of the season was crowned autumn champions, while they took second place in the final table, four points behind Dro, and secured their place in the promotion round. However, they had to give way to Triestina in the first round. The post of Stefan Gasser, who now coaches league rivals Brixen, has been taken over by veteran coach Paul Pircher for the new season.

With Christian Platter, Theo Pamer and Valentin Brugger, three local kickers were “brought back” by relegated Obermais. Stefan Gufler, Dominik Pixner and Philipp Schwarz from their own youth are introduced to the first team.

But the team also has some departures. Hannes Filehner has joined Bozner FC, Robert Kofler and Max Lanthaler have moved to SC Passeier, Luis Schwarz is taking a break and Peter Pichler will also be taking a step back. Julian Kofler (Jugend FC Südtirol) and Martin Knoll (Lana) also said goodbye. Coach Paul Pircher's team will have to be without Alexander Hofer for a long time, as he will be out for at least eight months after tearing his cruciate ligament.

Start of training and test matches

ASC St. Martin resumed training on July 23rd and played a preparatory friendly against state league team Moos (3-0 win). Coach Paul Pircher's boys also took part in the “Psairer Cup” (August 3rd) and the Stefan Baumgartner memorial tournament (August 9th). At the 2nd “Psairer Cup”, the “Mortiner” defeated Nals 2-0 in the first match, while they even won 5-0 in the final against Riffian. At the 14th Stefan Baumgartner Memorial Tournament in Lana, the semi-final game against Lana ended goalless, with Hans-Rudi Brugger and Co. retaining the upper hand 3-2 in the penalty shootout and qualifying for the final. In the final game for tournament victory, St. Martin was able to make up a deficit against state league team St. Pauls in regular time. In the penalty shootout, however, the Überetscher had the better nerve (2:2, 6:3 after penalty shootout).
