Özil's glamorous wedding – Erdogan's best man

The two exchanged vows on Friday evening in front of 19 guests at the five-star Four Seasons Hotel, a 300th-century Ottoman palace on the Bosphorus. According to Turkish reports, the 30-year-old Arsenal professional Özil picked up the former Miss Turkey from her father's house in the afternoon to go to the wedding ceremony. According to media reports, Özil and Gülse have been a couple since 2017. They have been engaged since January. The couple apparently wants to spend their honeymoon in a villa on the Turkish Aegean Sea.

As part of their glamorous wedding, the two announced a big fundraiser. Özil announced on social media that he would like to provide a total of 1000 operations to children in need around the world. At the end of the Islamic fasting month of Ramadan, he also donated a meal to 14.000 needy Turks and 2000 Syrian war refugees, according to the sports newspaper “Fanatik”.

Özil sparked discussions last summer when he posed for a photo with Erdogan with his German national team colleague Ilkay Gündogan. After the debacle with the German national team at the World Cup in Russia, he announced his resignation from the DFB team in July and denounced “racism and a lack of respect”. Özil's allegations and the DFB's handling of the affair led to a controversial debate in Germany.
