Sales fell from 265,1 to 240,1 million euros. This emerges from the report presented by CFO Peter Peters on Wednesday. "It won't be the end of the world if we don't play in European competition for a year," said Peters, pointing to growth in all operational business areas: "We have enormous strength in the basic business." Revenues from gaming operations rose by 6,5 to 37,6, from media exploitation rights with the new TV contract by 5,0 to 81,2, from merchandising by 1,1 to 16,3 and from sponsorship by 0,4, 70,9 to 129,7 million euros. But financial liabilities also grew from 142,0 to 90 million euros - mainly because the Royal Blues are modernizing and expanding their club premises. A total of XNUMX million euros will be invested in two construction phases. For 2018, Peters expects “further increasing revenues and a positive consolidated result”. He is planning sales of over 257 million euros and a positive result in the mid-single-digit million range. “Our license application is based on participation in the Europa League,” explained the CFO, adding that additional income of 15 million was calculated. If the current Bundesliga runners-up qualify for the Champions League, this item would increase significantly because higher bonuses will be paid out to the clubs in the premier class next season than before. The fact that the traditional club made a loss was mainly due to the significantly reduced transfer revenue. Instead of 50 million euros like in 2016 through the sale of the young star Leroy Sane, the Gelsenkirchen-based company only received twelve million. In 2015, world champion Julian Draxler banked 40 million. In addition, 15 million were missing from the international competition, the restructuring of the team with the separation from coach Markus Weinzierl cost another eight million. For this reason in particular, salary costs for the professional squad rose from 80 to 92 million. The club will have greater financial flexibility at the beginning of next year when it pays its final installment for the arena, which opened in 2001. “This is a huge step, we have then successfully completed the project,” said Peters. The Schalke stadium cost 260 million euros, "we repaid the bank debts in 18 years."
