Platini calls for FIFA boss Infantino to resign

Infantino secured his position “through a clever combination of circumstances” without any “particular legitimacy,” the 64-year-old said in an interview with the Swiss newspaper L'Illustre . Most recently, three unreported secret meetings between Infantino and Swiss Federal Prosecutor Michael Lauber caused a stir. These took place in 2016 and 2017. There are therefore allegations of abuse of office, violations of official secrecy and favoritism against Lauber, as he had led several proceedings against world football at the time. This also included the proceedings in the summer fairy tale scandal surrounding the awarding of the 2006 World Cup to Germany, which was discontinued at the end of April due to the statute of limitations. The meetings are said to have been arranged at the request of the Swiss Infantino. Serious allegations “Infantino and Lauber think they are untouchable and above the law,” Platini said. “But I think Lauber knows that he has crossed the red line. As for Infantino: In my opinion, he should resign from his position. As an opportunist, he will do everything not to give up his position.” Platini himself was sentenced to an eight-year ban from all functions in football by FIFA's Ethics Committee in 2016. The reason was a payment from former FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter to the Frenchman, which was suspected of corruption. The sentence was later reduced to four years and ended in October last year. After the ban was confirmed, Platini immediately resigned as president of the European Football Union (UEFA).
