As far as the line-up is concerned, coach Stefano Vecchi swapped the cards at the last moment. Thiam returned to the starting eleven after his injury and supported Campo and Maritato up front from the start. In midfield, the coach chose Uliano, who was given preference over the ailing Branca, while Kiem and Cappelletti formed the central defensive pairing. Meanwhile, Bassoli replaced Martin, who had a hand injury, on the left wing.

2500 spectators stormed into the Drusus Stadium in Bolzano on Sunday to watch the playoff first leg up close (around 200 fans traveled from Carpi). Carpi started the game with a lot of pressure, but FC Südtirol held on decisively. In the eighth minute the guests had to miss a chance. In the eleventh minute, Maritato managed to break into Carpi's penalty area and outpace the goalkeeper. Sportiello fouled the striker. The referee awarded a penalty, which Alessandro Campo cleverly converted to make it 1-0 for the home team. It was the FCS striker's eleventh goal of the season. The FCS then continued to apply pressure and in the 15th minute Campo secured a good opportunity for Cappelletti with a free kick, whose header was saved with a great reaction by goalkeeper Sportiello. Eleven minutes later Carpi equalized to make it 1-1. Di Gaudio won the ball on the edge of the penalty area, which he cleverly played to Della Rocca. He finally confidently headed the leather into the net. What the linesman didn't see was that the striker was clearly offside. Despite the unexpected equalizer for Carpi, the FCS quickly reorganized itself and pushed for another goal. In the 32nd minute, Bassoli delivered a good pass to Uliano, who shot the ball just over the crossbar. Carpi was able to get back into the spotlight in the 34th minute with a low cross from Pasciutti to Concas. Concas freed himself from Kiem and was only stopped by Marcone. In the final minutes, the nervousness became noticeable: Coach Vecchi was sent off the pitch after a violent protest.

Carpi struck surprisingly in the 68th minute

In the second half of the game, Orfano replaced Stefano Vecchi on the sidelines. The white and reds started like the fire department right from the start, but were met with strong resistance. In the 61st minute, Pasciuti was shown a yellow card after a serious foul. Cappelletti shot the free kick very powerfully and confidently, but too centrally. In the 68th minute, Carpi struck surprisingly: Stefano Letizia was able to net past the goalkeeper Marcone, who was further ahead, to give Carpi a 1-2 lead. The FCS then threw everything forward again. Pasi and Thiam left the field and Furlan and Maritato came on instead. However, Coach Vecchi's boys were unable to change the result. In the end, Carpi conquered the Drusus Stadium with 2-1 goals. The second leg will take place next Sunday. Kiem and Co. absolutely have to win with a two-goal lead.

Marcone: “They played well and had luck on their side”

There is disappointment at FC Südtirol, which is also reflected in the look of goalkeeper Gabriel Marcone. “We deserved more, but in the end that’s just how it went. We are disappointed, but we will fight like lions in the second leg. We believe we can still do it, even if we have to hope for a miracle,” said Marcone immediately after the game.
