Plose coach Matthias Regele: “We’re forcing luck at the moment”

SportNews: Mr. Regele, have you and your players already cut the table out of the newspaper? Matthias Regele: I hope not (laughs). I think we can assess this realistically. We're having a great phase, a run and it's nice that we were able to get ten points and are now in second place. At the moment we are forcing luck because the team believes in victory until the end.

Just like on Sunday against Ahrntal...

Exactly. We were lucky to win with an own goal in the last minute. But it wasn't undeserved. But as I said, this second place is a snapshot. There are only ten points against relegation. Of course it's great that we already have ten points. Last year we had 14 points after the first half of the season.

So now is the time to take advantage of this run?

We now have to take as many points as possible. Because it will be very difficult to stay in the league this year. We need at least 25 more points. A lot will depend on what happens to the teams from the region in Serie D.

To what do you attribute your team's run? I think we've done great preparation and we've already seen at the various tournaments in the summer that we can keep up with teams like St. Georgen if we play in a tactically disciplined manner and go into the game with the right fighting attitude. Then we were spared any major injuries and most of the players are in good shape. We started the championship with a defeat against Comano, even though we didn't play badly. The team stayed calm and now with every win they have gained a lot of self-confidence. The team believes in itself and has always been rewarded so far. This is also important because what good is it if you play well but end up empty-handed?

How do you keep your players from taking off?

As a player-coach, I would of course notice very early on if something like arrogance was creeping in. And I could also react immediately. But I'm not afraid that something like this will happen to us. We only have ten points and haven't achieved anything yet. Last year we had to tremble until the end. That's why it would be even nicer this year if we could stay in the league earlier. We are a village club and if we don't get the most out of ourselves, then we have no chance. The characters in the team certainly appreciate this correctly.

Plose's home strength is striking. Three games, three wins...

At least it looks that way. But we played the first game in Brixen, and only then were we able to play on our new artificial turf pitch. So it wasn't really a home advantage for us. But what inspires us is the enormous backdrop in St. Andrä. The euphoria is very great, the spectators are behind us, our achievements are being honored. Of course you feel that as a player and it inspires you even more.

The derby against Naturns is on Sunday. What are your goals in Vinschgau?

Of course we go out on the pitch to win. I'm not someone who thinks about a draw or even a defeat right from the start. Naturns has achieved four draws and is now eager to get its first win. That's why it will be very, very difficult for us. But we will do everything we can to get the next points credited to our account.
