Presidential election failed: Italy's football association in deep crisis

Fiumicino (SID) The Italian Football Association (FIGC) is sliding ever deeper into crisis. The election of a new president planned for Monday failed. After four rounds of voting, none of the three candidates for the association leadership was able to win with a majority. This means that the association must now be placed under the supervision of a commissioner who is supposed to find a way out of the crisis, Italian media reported. The Italian Olympic Committee CONI will appoint this commissioner on Thursday. This is probably CONI President Giovanni Malago. This must find a way out of the crisis in which the association has fallen since the national team was eliminated from the World Cup. Cosimo Sibilia, president of the Italian Amateur League (LND), third division president Gabriele Gravina and the head of the players' union (AIC), Damiano Tommasi, were up for election as successor to former president Carlo Tavecchio. Ex-national player Tommasi described the failed election as an embarrassment for all of Italian football. Tavecchio resigned after the Italian national team's historic World Cup exit in December. For the first time in 60 years, Italy will not take part in a World Cup in Russia this year.
