Draw in the derby: TSG has hardly any hope of winning the European Cup

Sinsheim (SID) For 1899 Hoffenheim, participation in the European Cup again is becoming increasingly distant. Last year's fourth place team couldn't get past a 1-1 (0-0) draw in the Baden derby against SC Freiburg and is still waiting for its second win this year. The Croatian Andrej Kramaric (57th) scored for TSG, who had been weak for weeks. Nils Petersen was successful for SC with a penalty kick (66th). In front of 30.150 spectators in the sold-out Rhein-Neckar Arena, which was far from full due to the freezing temperatures, almost nothing happened in the early stages. Both teams hardly managed anything on offense. The hosts, who had to make do without national players Kerem Demirbay and Stefan Posch, only gained a visual advantage - nothing came of it in the first 20 minutes. The Freiburg team, who were missing Mike Frantz, Florian Niederlechner and Nicolas Höfler, had no trouble defensively against coach Julian Nagelsmann's uninspired team. The Kraichgau team, whose sports director Hansi Flick is apparently about to leave after just nine months in office, were still waiting for their first dangerous shot on goal after 25 minutes. SC coach Christian Streich's tactics worked perfectly up to this point. On the other hand, Nagelsmann directed incessantly from the sidelines, but in vain. After half an hour, the Hoffenheim coach waved the fence and sent three reservists to warm up. This measure also did not bring the hoped-for success, the TSG professionals continued to creep lethargically around the pitch - even though Nagelsmann almost screamed himself hoarse. It wasn't until the 42nd minute that Dennis Geiger caused danger in front of the Freiburg goal for the first time after work from Serge Gnabry. Even after the break, the game didn't get any better. Apart from a good save by Freiburg goalkeeper Alexander Schwolow on a Gnabry shot (51st), there were hardly any highlights at first. That changed six minutes later. Schwolow couldn't do anything against Kramaric's free kick. Shortly afterwards the same applied to former SC keeper Oliver Baumann on the other side when Petersen took a penalty. The attacker had previously been fouled by Hoffenheim captain and defense chief Kevin Vogt. It was Petersen's twelfth goal of the season, but he has little hope of taking part in the World Cup. In the 75th minute, Pavel Kaderabek for 1899 was denied by the aluminum. The best players on Hoffenheim's side were Gnabry and Geiger. At Freiburg, Caglar Söyüncü and goalkeeper Schwolow were able to convince.
