Rolf Schafstall died at the age of 80

Bochum (SID) Second division soccer team VfL Bochum is mourning the loss of former coach Rolf Schafstall, who, according to the club, died on Tuesday at the age of 80. Schafstall coached the Revierklub a total of three times. He was also under contract as a coach at Schalke 04, MSV Duisburg, Rot-Weiss Essen, Karlsruher SC, Bayer Uerdingen, Hannover 96 and Fortuna Düsseldorf, among others. The football teacher last lived in Krefeld. One of his greatest successes was reaching the UEFA Cup semi-finals with MSV Duisburg (1978/79) and the DFB Cup semi-finals with VfL (1981/82, 1-2 against Bayern Munich). The Duisburg native was considered the epitome of the authoritarian, uncompromising football coach and was primarily concerned with relegation battles during his twelve professional positions. He was successful often enough. Schafstall grew up in Duisburg with seven siblings and later worked as a mine electrician at the Neumühl colliery. As tough as his job was, he also played football, as a feared defender for Hamborn 07 and SSV Reutlingen.
