End of season in Belgium now official: Bruges champions

The Pro League announced this on Friday evening. This decision has been postponed four times since the beginning of April. The general assembly of the league now voted to classify the table after the 29th matchday as the final ranking, meaning Club Bruges won the Belgian championship for the 16th time. Brugge also receives the right to start in the group phase of the Champions League, while pursuers KAA Gent can take part in the qualifying round for the premier class. As bottom of the table, Waasland-Beveren is relegated to the second-tier Division 1B. The question of promotion, however, still needs to be clarified: In the play-off between Beerschot VA and OH Leuven, the second leg is still pending (first leg: 1-0), which should, if possible, be played before the start of the 2020/21 season. The coming season is scheduled to begin on August 7th. The leagues in the Netherlands and France had previously been canceled due to the corona crisis. Cyprus also declared its season over on Friday. The Pro League was the first major league in Europe to announce the end of the season on April 2nd. At this point, there was still one match day scheduled, after which the play-offs were supposed to start. However, under pressure from the European Football Union (UEFA), the Belgians postponed the decision. UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin had warned that in the event of a premature cancellation, the participation of Belgian clubs in the 2020/2021 European Cup would be at risk.
