SheBelieves Cup: DFB women have to be content with a draw against England

Harrison (SID) The German soccer players missed their first sense of success of the year in the second game of the SheBelieves Cup in the USA. The Olympic champion had to be content with a 2-2 (1-1) draw against third-placed England in the World Cup in Harrison/New Jersey and can already write off his triumph at the star-studded four-nation tournament. In a lively encounter, national coach Steffi Jones' selection took the lead twice thanks to Hasret Kayikci (17th) and an own goal from Millie Bright (51st). But Ellen White (18th/73rd) equalized with a brace. With one point, Germany is in third place in the table behind England and the USA (both 22.00) before the last game against France on Wednesday (1 p.m. / Sport4) in Orlando. Three days after the opening 0-1 defeat against the hosts, Jones relied on two new players in the New York Red Bulls arena: Lena Goeßling for the injured defense chief Babett Peter and Kayikci as a striker. The national coach also mixed things up a lot in the midfield. With the exception of Svenja Huth on the right wing, all players started in different positions. The change initially seemed to be fruitful; the German team played forward with more pressure and speed. But then things got turbulent: First Kayikci maneuvered the ball into the goal after a commotion in the penalty area, then White equalized in direct response with a deflected long-range shot. After this microsleep in defense, the DFB selection noticeably lost control of the game and thus invited the Lionesses to make dangerous attacks. A shot from Toni Duggan (24th) just missed the German goal. Shortly after the break, the Germans benefited from a slapstick-like performance from the English backline. The rushing goalkeeper Siobhan Chamberlain deflected a shot from substitute Lina Magull onto the heel of central defender Bright, from where the ball bounced into the goal. When the score was equalized again, the German defense was completely out of touch with a long ball from midfield; the strong White converted ice-coldly in a one-on-one with goalkeeper Almuth Schult. This year, the SheBelieves Cup serves as intensive preparation for the DFB women for the hot phase of World Cup qualification, which continues in April. On the way to the 2019 finals, the two-time world and eight-time European champions should not allow any further slip-ups after a home defeat against Iceland.
