Victory on penalties: Liverpool wins the Supercup

Previously, regular playing time (1:1) and extra time (2:2) had been evenly matched. Sadio Mane (48th, 95th) scored twice for Liverpool. Chelsea scored the opening goal through Olivier Giroud (36th), Jorginho (101st) took the Londoners to a penalty shootout to make it 2-2. There the Spaniard Adrian saved Tammy Abraham's last penalty. For Liverpool it was the fourth Super Cup triumph in the club's history. The trophy was also lifted in 1977, 2001 and 2005.

Liverpool clearly took the initiative at the start of the first all-English UEFA Super Cup and restricted the Blues in their own half. Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa was on hand for Mohamed Salah's first big chance (16'). As the first half progressed, the Londoners found their way into the game much better, were extremely dangerous on the counterattack and found significantly more opportunities overall.

Pedro slammed the ball onto the crossbar from a tight angle, Liverpool goalkeeper Adrian had his fingertips on it (22'). The substitute for the injured Brazilian Alisson also saved from Mateo Kovacic (32nd) in dire need. Four minutes later, the 32-year-old was beaten. The Frenchman Giroud completed a strong move via N'Golo Kante and Christian Pulisic to take the deserved lead. Pulisic's supposed 2-0 (40th) was rightly not recognized because of offside.

Liverpool dominates second half Liverpool's German coach Jürgen Klopp may have found the right words at halftime. The Reds came out of the locker room much improved and quickly equalized. The ball landed in the penalty area via Fabinho and Roberto Firmino to Mane, who reacted quicker than Kepa and beat the Chelsea goalie. Fabinho almost added more, but his powerful shot from 20 meters wasn't far off (50'). Kepa was also on hand for a deflected Henderson shot (51'). The Chelsea goalkeeper really distinguished himself in the 75th minute. First he saved a Salah shot, then he parried Virgil van Dijk's follow-up shot with the help of the crossbar and pole. Hero of the evening: goalkeeper Adrian This paved the way for extra time. There, Mane first came to the fore again. After initiating the action himself, the offensive star was ideally served by Firmino and hit the goal via the underside of the crossbar. But Chelsea hit back. Adrian was first able to save from Abraham's shot (98'), but a minute later he unfortunately brought down the Blues' joker in the penalty area. Jorginho confidently used the penalty awarded. Afterwards, Chelsea came very close to victory, but Abraham (104th) narrowly missed the goal, as did Pedro (114th). Adrian also excelled at a shot from Mason Mount (113').

Since Chelsea lost out on penalties, it was the second setback of the current season after the bitter opening 0-4 in the league against Manchester United. Liverpool succeeded Atletico Madrid. The referee delivers a confident performance Referee Stephanie Frappart delivered a confident performance. For the first time, a woman played in an important UEFA competitive game in men's football. This wasn't a first for the 35-year-old Frenchwoman. She was used for the first time in the French Ligue 1 in April and is now part of the permanent referee pool in the top French men's league.

Victory on penalties: Liverpool wins the Supercup

Liverpool won their first title of the new football season on Wednesday evening with the UEFA Super Cup. In an exciting all-English duel with Europa League champions Chelsea at Besiktas Park in Istanbul, the Champions League winner narrowly managed to get the upper hand 5-4 on penalties.
