St. Martin: The Solid Ones

St. Martin has been part of the Oberliga for four years now. After the national league championship title in the early summer of 2012, which meant that the Mortiners returned to the regional football upper house after a 16-year absence, St. Martin, driven by great euphoria, played a great league season and came second. The following year (2013/14) they narrowly escaped relegation before Daniel Lanthaler & Co. have been quietly circling in the middle of the table since last season. This year it will probably be a solid top 10 place again. “We are of course completely satisfied with the championship,” explains Alexander Hofer, Mortiner’s sporting director. “Our goal from the start was to stay in the league, and we overcame this hurdle again this year.” There was little dissatisfaction in some places at the beginning of the season: “With the departure of Hansrudi Brugger, we lost a figurehead who, of course, was not equal replace was. That's why we didn't really know how the season would go. But the young players did an excellent job, which is why we were able to achieve our goal relatively quickly.” The coaching system with player coach Martin Saltuari, which is unique in the league, also worked perfectly. “Even though Martin enjoyed the games almost exclusively from the sidelines towards the end of the championship, he was worth his weight in gold throughout the season both as a player and as a coach,” said Hofer, who worked as a substitute last season after recovering from an injury stood on the field.

Hardly any changes for next year As befits a solid team, more or less the same team will tackle the league adventure next season. “Goalkeeper Platter was confirmed just like the Baggio brothers. The local players will also remain with us. We are still in negotiations with Hansi Mair and Niklas Kuen (he could be omitted for study reasons, editor's note).

St. Martin: The Solid Ones
