Tedesco: Meyer's departure would be "a tough act"

Gelsenkirchen (SID) Coach Domenico Tedesco (32) from Bundesliga soccer club Schalke 04 is hoping that Max Meyer (22) will stay after Leon Goretzka's departure to record champions Bayern Munich in the summer. "That would of course be a tough number if Max left too. But we wouldn't stop playing football at Schalke because of that," Tedesco told the Sportbuzzer portal: "Max has an offer from us. He's thinking about it now. I know what we have in Max. But Max also knows what he has in us." Tedesco therefore sees a good chance of extending the contract, which expires in the summer. "I don't think he's ever played as much as he does now. He's found a position where he can play to his strengths. He's told us several times that he feels very comfortable," said the German-Italian about him U21 European champion. The Royal Blues made an initial offer to Meyer's agent Roger Wittmann in mid-January. When the Goretzka transfer was confirmed at the beginning of February, Schalke made an improved offer for Meyer in order to prevent the departure of another top performer. Tedesco also had high hopes of staying with the 23-year-old Goretzka: "When it came to whether Leon would extend his contract or not, I really got involved in this topic. I spoke to Leon a lot and showed him prospects . I have done everything in my power."
