Thomas Albanese: “I feel like I’ve been reborn”

Thomas Albanese wore the FC Südtirol jersey for three years, celebrating the historic promotion to Serie C1 in the white and red jersey, but then things went quiet for the goalscorer from Varese. First at L'Aquila in the third division, then in Serie D at Sansepolcro and Recanati, the already injury-prone striker was repeatedly derailed by groin problems. In the summer, his former FCS teammate Roberto Mirri offered him a new opportunity by allowing him to play in St. Georgen. After his accuracy seemed to be lost at the start of the season, he finally broke the spell on Sunday and scored his first two goals in the “Jergina” jersey.

Thomas Albanese, how are you feeling after what is probably a special weekend? “It's a great feeling. A lot of burden has been lifted from me in the last few hours, now I want to really get started with the help of my teammates and the great club environment.”

Can you explain to us how the move to Pustertal came about? “My current teammate Roberto Mirri, who I knew from my time at FC Südtirol, warmly recommended this change to me. He helped with the initial contact, then everything went very quickly. President Brugger immediately convinced me to move to St. Georgen. I feel right at home here now.”

The current success of ASC St. Georgen probably also contributes to this.

“Exactly, my teammates are really fantastic. They immediately welcomed me into the team. This shows an intact team spirit. The coach pushes us really hard in training and at the same time creates an irrepressible will in the players' minds. The recent eight victories in a row are no coincidence, but woe betide anyone who lets the reins slide now.”

Does St. Georgen have what it takes to secure the Oberliga title?

“It's difficult for me to judge that, I don't know enough about the league. The fact is that we certainly have the prerequisites to offer successful football. That has to be our goal in every game.”

Do you still follow what's happening at your former club, FC Südtirol? “I still maintain good contact with numerous former teammates, and I also speak to sports director Luca Piazzi on the phone from time to time. I spent three incredibly wonderful years in Bolzano, which is one of the reasons why I decided to return to South Tyrol.”

Recently you were thrown off track by numerous injuries. What do you expect for the future? “I haven’t set myself any clear goals. Now it's just a matter of chipping away at this difficult time and getting closer to my best form every day. I just want to enjoy playing football again.”
