US Soccer Association plans mega tournament for 2020

As CONCACAF, the association for North and Central America, announced on Tuesday, USSF President Carlos Cordeiro had informed the ten associations of CONMEBOL (South American Football Association) by letter about his new tournament idea.

The competition would be a repeat of the Copa America Centenario, which was held in 2016 as a special edition of the South American Championship with teams from both American continents. The new tournament would be held in the USA like 2016 and would take place at the same time as the pan-European Euro 2020. According to the New York Times, the mega event is expected to bring in almost $200 million for the invited teams, with the winner alone expected to pocket eleven million.

CONCACAF welcomed the idea of USSF as a complement to the Gold Cup, the North American championship. CONCACAF believes a new tournament would expand “our vision of competitive soccer for our member organizations at the highest level.” It is not yet known what CONMEBOL's position on this is. The USA's tournament proposal is to be discussed on March 15 before the FIFA Council meeting in Miami.

So far, the regular Copa America is planned for this year in Brazil. However, the continental association is said to intend to postpone the tournament until 2020. In 2026, the USA, Canada and Mexico will also host the 23rd FIFA World Cup with 48 participating teams.
