US Soccer Association plans mega tournament for 2020

As CONCACAF, the association for North and Central America, announced on Tuesday, USSF President Carlos Cordeiro informed the ten associations of CONMEBOL (South American Football Confederation) by letter about his new tournament idea.

The competition would be a remake of the Copa America Centenario, which was held in 2016 as a special edition of the South American championship featuring teams from both American continents. The new tournament would be held in the USA, as in 2016, and concurrently with the pan-European Euro 2020. According to the New York Times, the mega-event is expected to generate nearly $200 million for the invited teams, with the winner alone set to collect $11 million.

CONCACAF welcomed the USSF's idea as a complement to the Gold Cup, the North American championship. A new tournament, CONCACAF believes, would "expand our vision of competitive soccer for our member organizations at the highest level." CONMEBOL's position on the matter has not yet been announced. The US tournament proposal is scheduled to be discussed on March 15, prior to the FIFA Council meeting in Miami.

The regular Copa America is currently scheduled for this year in Brazil. However, the continental governing body is reportedly planning to postpone the tournament to 2020. In 2026, the USA, Canada, and Mexico will also host the 23rd FIFA World Cup with 48 participating teams.
