Proceedings against Blatter expanded

Almost five years after criminal proceedings were opened in Switzerland, former FIFA President Joseph Blatter is threatened with further legal trouble. The Swiss Federal Prosecutor's Office (BA) is investigating the 84-year-old in the case of a million-dollar payment from the world association to the national association in Trinidad and Tobago (TTFF) in 2010. This emerges from documents from the authority that are available to the German Press Agency. The purpose of the transfer is unclear. According to the BA document, the accused persons also include two other former top FIFA officials. Blatter, who headed FIFA from 1998 to 2015, is accused of unfaithful business dealings. The AP news agency first reported. “The presumption of innocence applies to all those involved in the proceedings,” the BA said on Saturday and did not provide any information about the time frame. When asked by the German Press Agency, Blatter said: “I have taken note of the accusation, but I reject it as completely unfounded.” The Swiss BA has been conducting criminal proceedings against Blatter since September 2015 over FIFA's million-dollar payment to Michel Platini, former president of the European Football Union, which cost both officials their careers. A partial case based on other allegations was closed in May 2020, involving a rights agreement with the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) from 2005 that was unfavorable to FIFA. The proceedings have now been expanded. President of the TTFF in 2010 was Jack Warner, now 77 years old, who was later banned for life by the FIFA Ethics Committee for corruption offenses and also played a key role in the FIFA trial in the USA. Warner, who denies all allegations, has so far successfully resisted extradition from his home country. In 2005, Warner, who was also a successful politician in Trinidad and Tobago, was also president of the CFU. Regarding the new allegations, the Federal Prosecutor's Office states that FIFA's loan to the TTFF on April 13, 2010 "neither bore interest nor was secured by equivalent assets." The amount was still “not repaid and was allegedly converted into a subsidy in the same year”.
