Negotiations broken off: Bolt's football dream shattered

The eight-time Olympic sprint champion from Jamaica and the Australian first division team Central Coast Mariners did not reach an agreement despite a contract offer from the club, and negotiations were broken off on Friday.

“Despite several promising potential partners, Bolt and the Central Coast Marine staff have mutually concluded that they cannot agree on a deal in a timely manner,” the Mariners said. Recently there were discussions with external donors to improve the club's offer of an alleged annual salary of 80.000 euros.

“I would like to thank the ownership, management, staff, players and fans of the Central Coast Mariners for making me feel so welcome during my time there,” said Bolt. The 100-meter world record holder, who ended his athletics career last year, has been training with the Mariners since August and made headlines with two goals on his starting debut in a friendly match.

Bolt had already spoken openly about his ambitions for a football career during his active days as a sprinter. In the end, it wasn't enough to fulfill his childhood dream in the tenth place of the past A-League season.
