Walter Baumgartner: “We stand behind Tavecchio”

One day after his promotion to the Lega Pro board of directors, Walter Baumgartner is already bursting with enthusiasm. “My election is certainly a reward for FC Südtirol, which enjoys enormous prestige in Italy and is considered a role model club. I will try to use this role to push forward my idea of modern football. In particular, it is important to further improve the support of youth work and finally bring our stadiums into shape.”

Walter Baumgartner clearly represents a change in Italian football. This change is to be pushed forward next Monday when the president of the national football association is elected. The FCS leadership prefers the recently badly criticized Vice President Carlo Tavecchio to the inexperienced Demetrio Albertini. Baumgartner explains this decision as follows: “We are clearly behind Tavecchio because he knows the football business very well due to his experience as an official. He is the right person to set the right tone in this difficult time and deserves our vote.”

FC Südtirol is therefore following the line proclaimed by the Lega Pro. The chairman of the third division association, Mario Macalli, made it clear on Monday that Tavecchio could rely on the support of the Lega Pro clubs. “That was absolutely right. The third division teams must appear united in order to prevent the possible use of an interim management. This would be another setback. The choice should actually only fall on Tavecchio, especially since he has broad support,” said Baumgartner.

However, this support has begun to crumble in recent weeks. The reason for this is several controversial statements made by Tavecchio. The most famous one is probably this: "We get an Opti Poba who previously ate bananas and then suddenly plays for Lazio." The outcry in the sports scene and politics is great. Tavecchio himself apologized for the unfortunate choice of words, but subsequently gave his critics time and again reason to criticize his candidacy. However, Baumgartner stands by him: “Tavecchio made a naive and serious mistake. From a sporting perspective, however, his commitment remains undisputed. His knowledge and his program speak for themselves. A majority of the clubs have spoken out in favor of an experienced sports official and against a footballer (we are talking about ex-professional Albertini, editor's note). There are reasons for that,” explains Baumgartner in conclusion.
