What is the Paulsner master recipe, Fabian Mayr?

Fabian Mayr, the championship title was bagged by St. Pauls in a confident manner three match days before the end: Would you have expected that before the start of the season? Since no South Tyrolean team was relegated from the Oberliga to the Landesliga last year, I knew that St. Pauls was one of the close favorites for the title. We have experienced players in our ranks and a lot of quality. But in order to win a championship, you not only need quality, but also players who are hungry for success, humble, ambitious and, last but not least, always give 100 percent in every game.

What was the team's recipe for success this year? We always acted as a unit and thought from game to game. We never let ourselves be blinded by the table and showed great concentration every Sunday.

The squad was comparatively small, and well-known players like Fabian Obrist and Alex Tadè were lost during the season. But St. Pauls didn't let that bother them and played consistently, confidently and extremely successfully, especially in the second half of the season. Why? At the first meeting of the season there were almost 30 players present, so we all thought that we wouldn't have a problem with quantity this year. Over the course of the season, many players decided to either change clubs or quit for a variety of reasons. Those who were left gritted their teeth and put their foot down.

The defense in particular was outstanding: 20 goals conceded are the league's best. So is the saying “offense wins games, defense wins championships” true? Yes, I agree. With Toni Tarantino, we have one of the best goalkeepers in the region in our ranks, and our strikers also did a lot of defensive work. Everyone was hardworking.

In attack, however, Jonas Clementi scored half of all the goals. What do you think of his performance? Jonas could have scored a lot more goals, but 30 goals isn't bad either (laughs). He has to keep his feet on the ground and keep shooting next year!

Now the Oberliga adventure begins. The last guest appearance in the top regional league three years ago was immediately relegated after just one year. What lessons have been learned from this and what goal does St. Pauls have going into the next season? Our goal is certainly to stay in the league. To achieve this goal we have to concede fewer goals and score more goals than we did three years ago. With Fabio Zadra, the club has brought in a very valuable player who will certainly strengthen us and who fits well into our squad.

What does your personal footballing future look like? I will be part of this team next year too. We have a great and harmonious team and I am proud to be captain of this team. I still enjoy football and it also serves as a balance to my job, even if it's not always easy in terms of time and with our strict coaching team (laughs).
