Christmas in the stadium

I really wanted to buy a new mobile. A kitschy one where silver wings (or so it looks) are powered by little candles. It looks so easy, so exhilarating. That's nice. My partner doesn't like it. She finds it cheesy, although this term should also stand up to a lengthy discussion.

Luckily, despite all the resistance, I purchased such a small carousel last year and it is already in full service again. I still have enough candles. Another model will have to wait, as this can only be purchased at a Christmas market. But which one? And where? You would now need a separate Christmas market card. For Europe, of course. Which country, which region, which city opens the stalls in which all kinds of bric-a-brac have long since been found. From the Swiss knife to the Teflon pan. But there are also straw stars and artistic tops for Christmas trees. Some stalls actually still sell handcrafted nativity figures. However, they mostly have Chinese ancestors. Because often only blanks are delivered - so Josef is only two thirds finished - and local chisels then shape the nose. The saint from Tyrol is ready. No matter whether south or north. The good deed of those vaccinated Christmas markets always have a special fascination. They are the harbingers of the great orgy of gifts on the day of the Lord's birth. And before that there is Santa Claus. And maybe it even snows. I have never understood why people make snow on the ski slopes and leave out the Christmas markets. For example, from the Munich City Hall balcony you could make snow on Marienplatz with a cannon. Well, that idea is now stupid, because there won't be a Christmas market in the Bavarian capital again this time.

Innsbruck would have guns at his side. Practical, because incidence values are at their highest or not: in the Tyrolean capital as well as in Salzburg, where there are hardly any intensive care beds left, the angels watch over the fresh gingerbread. Always fully immersed in Corona events. We still have to wait and see what this looks like in South Tyrol, because far too many people still believe that Covid-19 will eradicate itself. Or that Christmas candles replace vaccination. Some who think so will probably have to spend Christmas lying on their stomachs in the hospital. A candle carousel doesn't help, only clinical staff who are at the stop.

Those who have been vaccinated must now protect those who refuse to be vaccinated. Please. When it comes to a good deed, I am happy to do my part, although I expect and can expect a certain level of accommodation. That then, for example, the constantly squirming crowd of politicians would take tougher action. In Cologne and Düsseldorf they opened the carnival with thousands of jesters on November 11th. And in football stadiums all over the country, even across Europe, football continues to be played in front of almost full stadiums, as if life hadn't been disrupted for a long time. The mayor of Munich, Udo Reiter, justified the cancellation of the Christmas market by saying that it was impossible to control who came to visit.

Christmas in the Allianz Arena Yes please Mr Reiter. I have a suggestion. The Allianz Arena would be a perfect option. Instead of unvaccinated footballers, people addicted to Christmas could be offered a wonderful place to stay for a few wonderful hours. Tested, vaccinated, recovered and checked upon entry. You could create a landscape with fir trees. Light open fires. Build a large nativity scene. A Covid-19-free bratwurst would be a perfect reward, another grog, a gingerbread heart (“For my darling”) that was left over from the Oktoberfest that didn’t take place and yes, of course a candle carousel or something else kitschy with candles in it movement can be caused.

And maybe you'll even park a vaccination bus outside the gate. After a few mulled wine, the little spade no longer hurts (it doesn't hurt anyway), only the head the day after. But I'm afraid that won't happen, because what is universal is the collective failure of all the decision-makers who thought the fourth wave was a new radio station, a streaming service. We should, we should, we could…politician jargon. And nothing happens and if it does, it's too late. I look at my spinning angels, daydream and ignore reality because Christmas is no longer the festival of joy. It has become a celebration of worry, of uncertainty. No, you will no longer be allowed to shake hands at Christmas mass this year. But you can continue to hug each other deeply when a goal is scored in the stadium. Wrong world.

Christmas is getting closer and closer, but the Christmas markets are under observation. Our columnist Sigi Heinrich, like many people, no longer understands the world, since football stadiums are still allowed to be full and unvaccinated kickers are playing on the field.
