World footballer election: Sorry from Nicaragua, accusations from Egypt

“Scandal at The Best,” was the ABC headline – the article was still featured prominently in the online edition of one of the most important Spanish daily newspapers on Friday. No wonder, since the captain of Nicaragua's national selection, Juan Barrera, and Egypt's football association had denounced irregularities in the allocation of votes.

Note chaos in Central America Nicaragua's football association has since admitted an administrative error. The completed voting documents were “erroneously” stamped with Barrera’s name and signature, the association said in a statement on Thursday (local time). But it was his representative Manuel Rosas who actually voted. Nicaragua's captain Barrera said on Twitter that he had not taken part in the vote. However, he appeared in the FIFA list - so he gave Messi his first vote. Barrera is concerned about the situation, his club Real Estelí FC said in a statement. Egyptian voice “overlooked”? The Egyptian association EFA, in turn, demanded an explanation from the world football association in a Facebook entry as to why the votes of its selection coach and captain were not counted. They were submitted in good time before the deadline of August 19th.

Regarding the Barrera case, FIFA announced: “We confirm that we have the correct votes signed by the player.” All were confirmed by the association’s stamp, it said – Nicaragua was asked to clarify. The apology from Central America came promptly.

The captains and coaches of all national teams as well as fans and media representatives were able to take part in the election. Star striker Messi from FC Barcelona received the award for the sixth time at the awards ceremony in Milan on Monday - a record. The 32-year-old prevailed in the free skate against the Portuguese and five-time title holder Cristiano Ronaldo and the Dutchman Virgil van Dijk. The Liverpool FC defender, trained by world coach Jürgen Klopp, was actually expected to be the winner.
