Winter transfers: England and Spain break all records

Zurich (SID) The transfer madness in professional football has reached new heights this winter, mainly due to the English and Spanish clubs. According to the "Big 5 Report" by the world association FIFA, which examines the activities of the five top leagues in Europe, 979,1 million euros were spent in Germany, England, France, Italy and Spain during the past transfer period. This corresponds to an increase of 70,6 percent compared to the previous year (574,0). As expected, the English Premier League was the “big spender” among the top leagues within this record with 482,8 million euros in transfer money. Spain's first division clubs, meanwhile, spent 361,3 million euros more than in the last seven winter transfer periods combined. The clubs from the Bundesliga, on the other hand, acted quite cautiously, spending only 68,3 million euros. A year earlier it was 119,1 million euros. According to FIFA, a total of 1 international transfers were made worldwide from January 31st to 3317st for a total of 1,28 billion euros. The “Big 5” completed 530 of these, or around one in six of these transfers, but spent around three quarters of the total amount on them. The report shows all transfers that were processed via the International Transfer Matching System (ITMS), which was introduced in October 2010.
