Frankfurt/Main (SID) The German Football League (DFL) wants to conduct the debate about a possible reform of the so-called 50+1 rule transparently. “This will be a general debate without backroom commissions,” said DFL boss Christian Seifert on Thursday in Frankfurt/Main: “We will question the league members in a comprehensive and very structured manner.” According to the DFL managing director, a decision is not expected “before the end of the year”. “The clubs can form an opinion and then report back,” said Seifert: “We will also consult the Cartel Office and, if necessary, the European Commission.” The DFL boss is "absolutely against" the total free market and the abolition of the 50+1 rule: "But whether the sheikh comes or the Russian - you can't have the debate at this level. That doesn't do the issue justice ." The discussion about reforming the controversial investor ban was restarted by the DFL presidium last week. In contrast to the other top European leagues, investors in Germany are currently only allowed to hold a majority stake in a club if they have “continuously” and “significantly” supported it for more than 20 years. In the Bundesliga, corresponding exemptions only apply to Bayer Leverkusen, VfL Wolfsburg and 1899 Hoffenheim. President Martin Kind of Hannover 96 recently put an application to take over the majority shares in the club on hold.
