New Hoeneß distancing himself from press conference statements

Munich (SID) Bayern Munich's President Uli Hoeneß continues to row back around three weeks after the harsh media criticism of the German football champions. In a letter to former members who left the club in anger after the sensational press conference by Hoeneß, CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and sports director Hasan Salihamidzic, the 66-year-old withdrew from statements for the second time in a few days about what was generally viewed as a failure appointment. "Looking at it from a little distance, there were also formulations that we would no longer use today," the Bild newspaper quoted from the printed letter signed by the club's boss. Only last Wednesday, Hoeneß showed remorse for his "shitty" attacks at the press conference against former Bayern professional Juan Bernat. "I was very sorry that I had insulted Juan Bernat, his style of play, I wouldn't do that again," said the 1974 world champion after Munich's 2-0 win in the Champions League against AEK Athens. In the all-out attack by the Bayern leaders against the media, Hoeneß accused Bernat of having been "almost solely responsible" for the fact that the Munich team were almost eliminated by FC Sevilla in the quarter-finals of the last Champions League season. Karl-Heinz Rummenigge irritated people during the press conference with an appeal to the media citing the Basic Law ("Human dignity is inviolable"). In his letter to the members who left, Hoeneß politely and cautiously advocated for them to rejoin the Bavarian family. The people of Munich hoped, wrote Hoeneß, "that we will be able to get you interested in our club again, especially through our team's convincing sporting performances." A corresponding change of heart among the alienated members “would be a great thing”.
