Sócrates equalized seven minutes later. Again it was Rossi who intercepted and converted a bad pass on the edge of the penalty area. A goal in the second half by Giancarlo Antognoni was refused recognition due to an alleged offside position. Brazil pushed for an equalizer but ran against a compact Italian defense.

In the 68th minute, Falcao took a pass from Junior and put a long-range shot into Zoff's net. With 22 minutes to go, Brazil was through again. In the 74th minute there was a corner for Italy. The blocked ball came back into the penalty area, where Rossi and Francesco Graziani were waiting. Both aimed to exploit the ball, but Rossi was quicker. He converted to make it 3-2. Brazil could no longer equalize and was eliminated.
