Pond Hockey European Championships at Ritten this year with Alexander Egger

Three more teams than last year are challenging the defending champions “Huskies” at the European Pond Hockey Championships. The “Huskies” have further strengthened themselves so that the team, which is full of former Serie A and DEL professionals, can achieve its third success in a row. At the media conference two weeks ago it was announced that the former captain of HCB Südtirol, Alexander Egger, would put on the jersey of the team that was spoiled for victory. Also taking part are the “Guidos”, who lost 2018:3 in the final in January 6 with the former Vipiteno professionals Hannes Stofner, Simon Baur and Patrick Mair.

At the Pond Hockey European Championships, however, the focus is not necessarily on sporting success. The organizers around OK boss Wolfgang Holzner never tire of emphasizing that values such as friendship, collegiality, fairness and fun are in the foreground. “Getting together, exchanging ideas, making friends is even more important to us. We are convinced that these are exactly the reasons why our international tournament is so well received by the more than 300 active players,” emphasizes Holzner.

With eight participating nations, a new record was also achieved in this respect, which the organizers are particularly pleased about from a tourism perspective. In addition to numerous teams from South Tyrol and the rest of Italy, ice hockey players from Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, the Czech Republic, Finland and the USA come to the picturesque South Tyrolean high plateau.

The rules of the game The rules of pond hockey are very simple. During the individual games, three players from a team consisting of up to eight players face each other. The game is played on two small goals without goalies. A match lasts 12 minutes, 20 minutes from the semi-finals onwards. Preparations are in full swing Preparations for the third major event on Ritten within a month are in full swing. No wonder that the organizers of the Pond Hockey European Championships want to present themselves as good hosts once again. “The next few days will be very intense. Finally, as far as preparations are concerned, we are entering the home stretch. But we have a well-rehearsed team, every move is perfect. The anticipation of a great tournament is almost palpable, because at Ritten there is almost no other topic of conversation, not only among all sports enthusiasts,” reports Holzner.
