Green light for the big canoe event on the Passer in Meran

Next weekend the canoeists in Merano will be in charge again. The international canoe slalom can be held on the Passer as scheduled. Until recently, the organizers of SC Meran were still very worried about whether the international canoe slalom on the Passer in Meran on Saturday and Sunday, May 20th and 21st, could even take place. The water level was still very low until last week and hardly allowed a race. “The international canoe slalom in Meran is now secured,” says OK boss Walter Weger, giving the green light for the big canoe event in Meran. “The water level has risen and is currently almost ideal for the canoe slalom,” reports the OC boss. The air temperature should continue to rise in the coming week. Then the snow could begin to melt and ensure enough water in the Passer. The OC boss Walter Weger expects around 120 participants from more than 10 countries.

The international canoe races on the Passer have been taking place since 1951. Meran has been the venue for the Canoe Slalom World Cup three times: 1953, 1971 and 1983. The Passer was also a stop in the Canoe Slalom World Cup twice: 2001 and 2004.

Paddling takes place on a technically demanding course between the Gilfklamm and the Steinernem Steg. As in previous years, spectators can once again follow the canoe slalom up close on the promenades and bridges.

At the international canoe slalom in Meran, the successful canoeists from SC Meran will also compete in the supreme discipline, the kayak single sculls. In their home races, Jakob Weger, Michael Luther, Martin Unterthurner, Valentin Luther and Jakob Luther from SC Meran as well as Matthias Weger, who competes for Naturfreunde Innsbruck, want to give their best again. Matthias and Jakob Weger are among the closest favorites in the kayak singles. Last year, Matthias Weger won both international races in the premier discipline. His brother Jakob Weger is considered the top favorite in the kayak singles at the U23 Italian Championships, which will be held on Saturday for the individual categories. On Sunday there will be the team races from 14.30 p.m., with the SCM paddlers aiming to win gold in the kayak single sculls. Valentin and Jakob Luther are paddling on the Passer on Saturday for tickets to the U18 World Championships in July in Bratislava (Slovakia) and the U18 European Championships in August in Hohenlimburg (Germany).

For Matthias and Jakob Weger, the international canoe slalom in Meran is also the last test before their participation in the general class canoe slalom European Championships from June 1st to 4th in Tacen (Slovenia).
