Jakob Weger paddles in Laibach with the world's best canoeists

The figurehead of the SC Meran canoe section, Jakob Weger, faces one of his biggest challenges to date in his European Championship debut in the Kunstkanal in Tacen, just outside the Slovenian capital Laibach. The 19-year-old SCM paddler from Schenna is taking part in the European Canoe Slalom Championships in the general class for the first time. The qualification heats in the men's kayak single sculls will be held on Thursday, June 1, 2017, in the Tacen art canal, the first at 15:25 p.m., the second at 17:35 p.m. 30 kayak paddlers, 20 in the 1st qualification and 10 in the 2nd qualification, make it into the semi-finals, which are scheduled for Saturday, June 3, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. The final run in the men's kayak single, for which the best 15 qualify in the semi-final run, begins on Saturday, June 3, 2017, at 15 p.m. Jakob Weger is paddling again with his old, beloved boat, with which he has already celebrated many successes, including winning his second U18 European Championship title in the kayak single sculls in Solkan/Neugörz (Slovenia) last year. “My goal is to reach the semi-finals in the kayak single sculls at the European Canoe Slalom Championships in Tacen. The final run would be a dream for me. The competition is very tough,” said Jakob Weger before his departure to Slovenia. On Friday, June 2, 2017, Jakob Weger will paddle with Giovanni De Gennaro and Zeno Ivaldi in Tacen for the European Championship medals in the kayak single team race. “Many nations can win precious metal in the kayak single team race, including Italy. The three of us will do our best to have an important say in the medal awarding in the kayak single team run,” says Jakob Weger. His older brother Matthias Weger (21), who paddles for the Austrian Canoe Association, narrowly missed out on the European Championship ticket in the kayak single scull this year as he came fourth in the European Championship qualification behind Andreas Langer, Felix Oschmautz and Mario Leitner.
