Bolzano welcomes the divers to the World Cup dress rehearsal

For the local divers, the event in Bolzano can be seen as the last endurance test before the international title fights in Russia. The main protagonists will once again be local hero Tania Cagnotto and her dubbing partner Francesca Dallapè, who will be hunting for the Olympic ticket for Rio 2016 at the World Cup in Kazan. “If the two of them make it onto the podium in Russia, they would qualify directly for Rio. That's why they want to come to Russia in top shape. In this sense, the Grand Prix in Bolzano represents an important test,” said national coach Giorgio Cagnotto.

Three South Tyroleans at the start

The Italian selection that takes part in the Grand Prix in Bolzano consists of 25 athletes. There are also three South Tyroleans in the squad: Tania Cagnotto, Maicol Verzotto and Vladimir Barbu. “As the host nation, we are allowed to send four athletes per individual event and two duos per synchronized event into the competition. This year there will also be a mixed synchronized competition, which is very important to FINA and will be held at the World Championships for the first time this year. Maicol Verzotto will compete in this discipline both from the tower with Noemi Batki and from the 3m board with Tania Cagnotto. New to the team is Vladimir Barbu, who recently competed at the European Games in Baku. At 16, he is still young, but we have already started several projects with him and will also try to help him qualify for Rio."

A 13-year-old athlete in the Chinese squad A total of 136 athletes will take part in the Fina Grand Prix in Bolzano. With 19 divers, China, which among other things sent a 13-year-old athlete from the tower into the race, is the nation with the most participants after Italy. Mexico is traveling to Bolzano with 14 athletes, while Canada and Russia are traveling with eleven each. “As it is the last stage before the World Cup, we initially had doubts as to whether the most important nations would register their participation. Luckily everyone agreed. “Bozen will once again become the capital of divers,” said Bolzano Nuoto President Ardelio Michieli.
