Tania, Maicol and Giorgio agree: “That was the best World Cup”

The star was undoubtedly Tania Cagnotto, who once again won big at her last World Championships and fulfilled her dream of winning her first gold medal in international championships on the 1m board. The woman from Talferstadt also won bronze twice: first in the individual jumping and then together with Maicol Verzotto in the mixed synchronized jumping on the 3 m board. “I've said it several times and can only repeat it: This was my best World Cup. I didn't expect such a medal haul. I had a good feeling from the 1m board and I knew that I could have a say in the race for first place. The bronze medal in the 3m board, however, was totally unexpected; I simply enjoyed the bronze medal in the mixed synchronized diving more. It was my last competition at a World Championships, so I just wanted to have fun. Maicol jumped really great,” said Cagnotto.

Maicol Verzotto, who made it onto the podium for the first time at a major international event in Kazan, was also very happy. “I've been training from the tower for ten years and I achieved my first podium finish from the 3m board: that's a bit strange. Apart from that, I would like to thank Tania for allowing me to jump for a World Championships medal. “She was undoubtedly a strong partner,” beamed the man from Bolzano.

Giorgio Cagnotto: “We have achieved a lot”

National coach and father Giorgio Cagnotto was also proud, as he saw first-hand how his protégés, especially his daughter, achieved great goals. The hard work over the years has definitely paid off. “We achieved a lot at the World Cup and I am proud, especially because the results come from a small club like Bolzano Nuoto, which will hopefully receive more attention in the future. We actually traveled to Kazan with the goal of securing Tania and Francesca's Olympic ticket in synchronized diving on the 3m board. However, this competition did not go as planned. Then the tide turned. We were certainly a bit lucky, but the results were all deserved. I would especially like to compliment Maicol Verzotto because it wasn't easy to withstand the pressure in mixed synchronized jumping with Tania. “But he didn’t let that deter him and put in a great competition,” said the national coach.

Looking ahead to Rio 2016

Now it's time for the local divers to take a well-deserved break, even though their sights are already set on the Olympic Games in Rio in 2016. After these, Tania Cagnotto will end her successful career: “I am happy with what I have achieved. Even if my career ended today, I would be happy. I will approach the coming year calmly. Of course it would be nice to make it to the podium in Rio, but I'm not obsessed with it."

Her father agrees: “We don’t have to go to Rio to get revenge for what happened in London. We know that everything has to be right to win a medal: we will do everything in our power and come to the Olympic Games well prepared. The rest will then become apparent.”

The two Bozen divers Tania Cagnotto and Maicol Verzotto, who were among the main actors at the World Championships in Kazan, as well as national coach Giorgio Cagnotto returned from the title fights in Russia and presented their medals at a press conference on Tuesday morning in the Bozen Lido.
