DFB cancellation candidates: Who are the winners and losers?

Gewinner Manuel Neuer: The DFB captain passed his World Cup endurance test despite conceding two goals. Neuer held what he could hold, but also showed occasional wobbles. A huge mistake, the bad pass after a few minutes, went unused by Alessandro Schöpf. Even if there remains a certain residual risk after an injury break of more than eight months: the Munich keeper will probably go to the World Cup as number 1.

The world champions: The game in Austria showed one thing: the German team cannot function without the world champions. Toni Kroos, Thomas Müller, Jerome Boateng or Mats Hummels cannot be replaced. And Sami Khedira was also missing after being substituted at halftime as a stabilizer in midfield.

The established ones: Ilkay Gündogan has established himself as an alternative in the defensive center behind Kroos and Khedira. Löw will probably not be without the experienced Mario Gomez, who was only allowed to audition briefly in Austria. Nils Petersen was too weak for that on his debut. Despite a poor performance at the Wörthersee Stadium, there is also no way around Joshua Kimmich and Jonas Hector in the full-back positions - there are no alternatives here. loser Marc-André ter Stegen: It's a bitter situation for the FC Barcelona keeper. He's doing great in Spain and in the Champions League for months, but in Russia he'll probably still be number 2 behind Neuer. Leroy Sane: The 22-year-old winger was one of the best professionals in the Premier League last season. In the national team, the highly gifted Sane recently fell far short of expectations. The young star from Manchester City also disappointed across the board against Austria. His big problem is Löw's direction of play. Sane is a classic winger, but he always has to move into the half spaces in the DFB team. That doesn't suit him. Basically, Sane doesn't fit into the Löw system. Even if he is seen as a promise for the future, he wouldn't have to be surprised if Löw surprisingly left him out for Russia.

The prank candidates: Since the nomination on May 15th, there has been speculation as to who the national coach will remove from his provisional 27-man squad. Sebastian Rudy and Julian Brandt, who had already been caught before the 2016 European Championship, as well as Nils Petersen and Jonathan Tah were named right from the start. The Leverkusen player wasn't allowed to play at all against Austria; Petersen would have hoped for his debut "that I would draw attention to myself with a good move or a goal." The Freiburger did not succeed. Rudy and Brandt didn't recommend each other either. When it comes to goalkeepers, after Neuer passes the test, Bernd Leno or Kevin Trapp will be hit (he is probably the first candidate for elimination).
