FIFA: “Mega World Cup” 2022 in Qatar off the table for now

Moscow (SID) Increasing the 2022 World Cup in Qatar to 48 participants is off the table for the time being. The request submitted by the ten South American associations to carry out a feasibility study will not be voted on at the FIFA Congress on Wednesday, said Gianni Infantino, president of the world association FIFA, on Sunday. As things currently stand, 32 teams will be competing in four years. “We have instructed the FIFA administration to first discuss the possibility of 48 teams with Qatar,” said Infantino following the FIFA Council meeting in Moscow. DFB President Reinhard Grindel had already pointed out possible legal obstacles in advance. Qatar finally applied for a World Cup with 32 teams. However, the increase for the 2026 tournament is a done deal. Morocco applied to host the first “Mega World Cup” as did the USA, Canada and Mexico in a joint campaign. The decision is also expected to be made by Congress on Wednesday. Infantino was considered at least a supporter, if not an initiator, of the proposal from the South American continental association CONMEBOL. More participants in Qatar would mean higher income for FIFA. However, it is very questionable whether the emirate could even handle the logistical challenge with 48 teams. A common orientation with neighboring countries currently seems unlikely due to the political crisis in the Persian Gulf.
